- The thigh gap trend equated a woman having a gap between her inner thighs with physical attractiveness and femininity. It ignored the fact that beauty and good health comes in all shapes and sizes. When it finally seemed that this body shame trend was dying down, a new trend that equates beauty and an indicator of good health as being able to touch your belly button from behind, emerged. Nonetheless, this trend is only addressing an aspect of flexibility. Even if you are flexible enough and your waist is small enough that you can touch your belly button, a small waist is not the sole indicator of good health. In fact, I know several people who are thin enough that they could easily be able to do this challenge and yet they are unhealthy in their food and lifestyles choices. By going along with this trend or allowing it to affect your body image you are only perpetuating something that in no way reflects good body or mental health. In fact. the only thing that people who are going along with this challenge are achieving is risking tearing their rotater cuffs.
